When it comes to downsizing your home, New Zealand has some distinct advantages in the options available. The Kiwi market offers a good range of properties, both rural and urban, to suit a variety of needs and budgets. This means downsizing does not necessarily have to mean a compromise in your lifestyle or living space.

While in many other countries downsizing options could be limited to apartment living, in New Zealand you can investigate options like a cottage or sleepout on a farmlet, for example. Or, if you are wanting to move to an urban area, there are plenty of compact, affordable and stand-alone homes on the market.

Whatever your reasons, here are some tips for downsizing your home:

Start By Evaluating Your Needs

Assorted mismatched glassware no longer in used but are taking up space in a cupboardBefore you start downsizing, take some time to evaluate your needs. Ask yourself how much space you need and what kind of layout would work best for your lifestyle. If you’re downsizing to save money, remember to factor in the cost of utilities and other associated bills. By spending the time at the beginning of the process to evaluate your needs, you will save yourself precious time and energy in the long run.

Create A To-Do List

To avoid feeling overwhelmed, create a to-do list before you get started. This will help you stay focused and get through each room methodically, without missing any steps. Try planning out each room in your home and write down all the things that need to be done, like decluttering or painting. Creating a list will also help you better prioritize tasks so that you can get them done efficiently.

Take Stock Of Your Belongings

The next step is to take stock of your belongings and decide what you want to keep and what you want to get rid of. This can be a difficult task, but it’s important to be ruthless and honest with yourself. Ask yourself whether each item is needed and be prepared to let go of items that you no longer use or that are taking up too much space.

De-clutter Your Home

One of the best ways to make downsizing easier is to de-clutter your home. This can be a daunting task, but it will make the process less overwhelming. Start by sorting through your belongings and get rid of anything you don’t need or use. You may find it helpful to set up a donation station or sell any unwanted items online.

Choose The Right Home

When downsizing, it’s important to choose the right home. You don’t want to downsize only to find yourself cramped and uncomfortable in your new space. Make sure to consider the layout of the home, the size of the rooms and whether it has enough storage.

Also, make sure you consider any possible future needs that may arise. Is there a chance you may have to take in family members? Could the property you are looking at have an extension added, or does the configuration of the rooms allow for this? Our situations change throughout a lifetime, and you want to future-proof your decision.

Maximize Your Space

A nunk bed is an excellent option for saving space in your home.

When downsizing, you need to make the most of every square foot. Look for furniture that can serve more than one purpose and use storage solutions to keep your belongings organized. You may also want to consider getting a Murphy bed or a loft bed. These are great space-saving pieces of furniture to have because you only need to pull them out when needed; the rest of the time you can have the space for other needs.

Don’t Be Afraid To Get Creative

One of the best things about downsizing is that it allows you to be creative. Use your imagination to come up with new and innovative ways to use your space. You could install a desk in your living room or create a mini-library in your bedroom. Maximizing your space will save you money in the long run because it will mean less furniture to buy.

Think Outside The Box

There are many creative ways to downsize your home. You could consider renting a small apartment or cottage and perhaps a separate storage unit for excess belonging that you just can’t give up! As mentioned earlier, New Zealand’s unique options for downsizing mean a cottage or sleepout in a rural area allowing you to downsize your living area but expand on the availability of extensive outdoor space.

The new trend toward tiny homes or self-contained caravan living is also an excellent option when considering downsizing.

Make It Your Own

One of the best things about downsizing is that you can make it your own. By choosing furniture and accessories that reflect your style and personality, you can turn a bland space into one you’ll want to spend time in. Add some personal touches like photos or artwork to make the space more special. And if you’re feeling crafty, try making your own art for the walls with items like tiles or shells.

A minimalist room, with white walls and wooden floors. All of the furniture is stylish yet minimal, and there is a natural, calming energy to the spaceEmbrace Minimalism

If you’re looking to simplify your life, consider embracing minimalism. This is the philosophy that less is more, and it can be a great way to downsize your home and simplify your life. By getting rid of superfluous possessions, you can focus on the things that really matter. You may also find that minimalism has a positive impact on your health and well-being.

A Special Note On Retirement Villages

Retirement Villages offer a wonderful opportunity to make a fresh start without a lot of work. You can downsize from your current home to one that suits you now and is also age appropriate. There are many carefully designed villages with the needs of retirees in mind, with safety features such as key-coded entry or communal areas where you can spend time with friends and neighbours.

In New Zealand especially, retirement village options are amazing. They are specifically located to take advantage of New Zealand’s unique lifestyle. Whether nestled in beautiful areas of greenery, or with optimum access to the beach, New Zealand retirement villages take full advantage of the uniqueness that is New Zealand.

Whatever your reason for downsizing your home, the secret to successfully doing so lies in the planning. By planning every stage of the process, you can move to your new home with ease and without stress. Take advantage of the options that New Zealand offers that are rarely available anywhere else in the world!

They were great and did not mind to stop off at my storage unit to store some white ware etc. Both my movers was friendly and got on with the job and didn’t laze around or take there time. These guys are well worth it! Move was from Oteha to Lucas Heights with a stop over at national storage.
